I strongly agreed with Atwell's approach on literacy, and how to better educate our students on writing & reading.First, she mentions that the profession of teaching doesn't receive the recognition that it deserves. Which I think is vital for in career, especially teaching due to the fact they are creating and empowering the future doctors and politicians. We are treated as second class citizens. Additionally, she goes on to tell us the the sector that most young teachers should do in is private, because the public system is making our teachers technician instead of reflective practitioners in the field.Secondly, the approaches that she took in her classroom to engage students in reading and writing, illustrates the teachers view on reading and writing. How can you teach reading and writing when you don't enjoy it yourself. The power she gives her students changes the attitudes and dynamic of the reading and writing. I like the idea of letting her students choose the topics and books to practice in class. The average students in her class have read 40 books a year is phenomenal. If we meet students where they are and allow them to chose their own path and then we as the teacher prepare them for harder challenges on the path of reading & writing, they will be become "authentic writers" as Atwell says. The students know what reading and writing are good for, and its no longer just an exercise.
